The American Junior Rodeo Association will be coming back to Mason the last weekend of April. Last year, the AJRA rodeo had over 200 contestants from all over Texas as well as the surrounding states. Once again, the Mason Rodeo Association will be hosting a double rodeo where the competitors can travel to one location and accumulate points at two rodeos. Our first rodeo will have two performances with the first being Friday night at 7:00 pm and the second on Saturday morning at 9:00 am. The second rodeo will have the first performance at 6:00 pm on Saturday night and the second at 9:00 am on Sunday morning. Not only will this help the competitors deter the high cost of travel for the weekend but it will also give the competitors and their families more time to spend in our beautiful town. Hopefully it will bring some good business to our community throughout the weekend.
The AJRA is considered one of the main training grounds for young rodeo talent while remaining a family oriented organization. Many professional cowboys and cowgirls got their starts in the AJRA and their children and grandchildren will be competing in Mason this weekend. The goals of the AJRA are to continue to furnish rodeo oriented families a place for them and their families to compete in youth rodeo and receive high quality awards and recognition for their accomplishments.
The members compete in separate boys and girls categories and in the following four age groups: 8 and under; 9-12; 13-15; and 16-19. Events will include barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, calf roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding.
A Calf Scramble will be held for the high school kids on Saturday night and 3 member teams can enter at the high school with Lance Rausch. Although the AJRA is a member organization where contestants compete for year-end points ANYONE under the age of 20 and not married can enter this rodeo.
The Mason Rodeo Association has received great support from the community for our annual banner sponsorship drive. Sponsors have their banners displayed for the Ranch Rodeo (which was held March 7), the AJRA Rodeo and the July Round-Up Rodeo. An $80 donation will cover sponsorship for all three events. If you are interested in being a sponsor please call Denise Brandenberger (347-5654), Jennie Armes (347-3480 or 347-4651), or Amanda McMillan (347-5916 or 347-2486.)
Concessions will be provided during all AJRA performances by our local Boy Scout Chapter. Their menu includes hamburgers, baked potatoes, frito pies, chili cheese fries, nachos, breakfast tacos, brownies, rice krispie bars, tea and lemonade! There is no cost for spectators and programs will cost $5.00. Come out and join us April 24, 25 and 26th - the competition will be tough!
