The Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country represents artists in four counties: Kimble, Mason, McCulloch and Menard. They hosted their First Annual Art Show and Sale in 2008. It was a “winner” not just for the association but, also, for Mason artist, Sue Kaan. Her piece titled Spring Cactus Blooms was selected through a paper ballot vote by the many visitors to the weekend show to win the ‘People’s Choice Award’!
Sue says, “Although I have had many business endeavors during my life, including being in the Antique business for 20 years, my love has always been color and my passion, art.”
She continues to add, “My dad was an artist and though I have taken lessons over the years, I am mostly self-taught. One of the most helpful teachers I have ever had taught me more about learning to see than learning to paint. I continue to be fascinated by color, light and shadow and a new area of painting, the Texas Hill Country plants and scenes has captured my imagination.”
In closing, she provided a hint that cactus might not be her focus this year, “More recently, I have been moved by our neighbor’s new lambs and sheep. Their expressions offer a wealth of inspiration. Seeing everyday beings and things in a new way makes my painting life new and creative. I feel blessed to be able to live in Mason, to paint and to enjoy the fellowship of fellow artists.”
FYI: Sue’s winning 2008 art work is now featured on this year’s tickets to the Second Annual Art Show Gala that will be on Friday, May 1st at the M~Squared Gallery located on the northeast corner of Mason’s historic square. The Gala is open to the public this year (7 p.m. - 9 p.m.) and the tickets are on sale at Mason’s Chamber of Commerce office for $10 each. You may also contact President Martha Kothmann at 325-258-4624 or Judy Uherek at 325-265-4480 for tickets, if you live out of town.
Last year’s opening night event was such an outstanding success that you can understand how hard the members are working now to guarantee the same pleasure this year. We invite you to come enjoy the Gala; you won’t be disappointed!
The show will run through Sunday, May 3rd and admission is free on Saturday (10-5) and Sunday (noon-4). The painted mediums will be joined by beautiful jewelry, photography and pottery to provide ‘art’ enjoyment for everyone.
