Rodrigo Bastidas

Rodrigo Bastidas, of Houston, a gentleman of integrity and honor passed away in Mason on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at the age of 85.

He was born July 12, 1923 in Quito, Ecuador to Dr. Antonio Bastidas and Sara Monge. He came to the United States when he was fourteen, attended military boarding school in Lousiana and graduated from LSU in 1947 as a petroleum engineer. He worked for many years in oil exploration for various US companies in both the US and in Ecuador.

He married Angela Valenzuela in 1950 and they were blessed with six children. They retired to Houston where he spent 15 years in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and also volunteered at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. He enjoyed sailing, ham radio and keeping up with the development of the energy industry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Angela, and one daughter, Patricia Bastidas. He is survived by one son: Tony Bastidas and wife Piera, US Navy, currently stationed in Japan; and four daughters: Ana Maria Bastidas of Austin, Monica Hinckley and husband Brent of Mason, Marisol Arteaga and husband Patricio of Houston and Michelle Bastidas and husband Mark Repman of Rockwall, 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at West Lake United Methodist Church, 1460 Redbud Trail, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Houston Museum of Natural History, One Hermann Circle Drive, Houston TX 77030-1799.
