Cowgirl Track

The Mason Cowgirl track teams compete in their District and Area meets the last two weeks in order to earn themselves a spot in the Regional Track Meet. The Cowgirls finished 2nd as a team at the District 30-A meet held in La Pryor on Wednesday, April 8th. The Cowgirls qualified in 9 of the 11 running events as well as three athletes in the pole vault.

The morning session began with the 3200m Run and preliminary qualifications in all other running events. Lydia Bjork ran a 12:35, which was her best time of the season, and placed 3rd. Yolanda Gonzalez also ran her best time of the year finishing 7th with a 13:55. The following Cowgirls were able to qualify for the finals: Rebekah Caffey (100m, 200m, 4X200m Relay), Brittny Schovajsa (100m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles, 4X100m Relay), Shayla Estes (4X100m Relay, 4X400m Relay), Paige Blair (4X100m Relay, 4X200m Relay), Kaitlyn Cavness (4X100m Relay, 4X200m Relay, 4X400m Relay), Hillary Bibb (800m Run, 4X200m Relay, 4X400m Relay), and Amanda Hudson (100m).

Field events began at the completion of preliminary running events. The top performances came from the three Cowgirl pole vaulters. Paige Blair was the District Champion and cleared a Mason High School record breaking height of 10’0” (previous held by Blair at 9’6”). Hillary Bibb and Amanda Hudson cleared their personal best heights of 9’0” and 8’0” respectively, placing 3rd and 4th. All three athletes advanced to the Area Meet. Other field event result: High Jump – Havana Schmidt (4’6”:5th), Emily Ellebracht (4’6”: 6th), Long Jump – Havana Schmidt (8th), Triple Jump (Havana Schmidt (30’5”: 6th), Shot Put – Madison Stewart (8th).

Running finals was the last session of the day. The top four in each event would advance to the Area Track Meet next week. The Cowgirls had two individuals that were District Champions. Hillary Bibb ran an amazing personal best in the 800m Run to clinch her third consecutive District Championship in that event running a 2:26.08. Rebekah Caffey won the 100m Dash running into the wind with a 12.98. Rebekah also placed 2nd in the 200m Dash just .03 seconds behind the 2008 State Champion. Lydia Bjork ran a 6:02.07 placing 3rd in the 1600m Run. Brittny Schovajsa qualified third in the 100m Hurdles with a 17.89 and finished 8th in the 300m Hurdles with a 56.70. Amanda Hudson and Ayla Reyes both finished 5th in the 100m Dash and 100m Hurdles and were alternates for the Area Meet. All three relays (4X100: Cavness, Schovajsa, Estes, Blair) (4X200: Cavness, Caffey, Blair, Bibb) (4X400: Cavness, Bjork, Estes, Bibb) advances placing 4th, 2nd, and 4th.

The Area Meet was the following week and was a finals only competition. Rebekah and Hillary were Area Champions in the 100m Dash and the 800m Run. Others advancing on to the Regional Meet in Huntsville on Friday, May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd are Rebekah Caffey (100m, 200m, 4X400m Relay), Lydia Bjork (3200m, 1600m, 4X400m Relay), Paige Blair (4X400m Relay), Hillary Bibb (Pole Vault, 800m, 4X400m Relay), Shayla Estes (4X400m Relay), and Brittny Schovajsa (4x400m Relay).

The Cowgirls will compete in a Regional Qualifiers meet in Fredericksburg on Friday, April 24th. The meet begins with field events at 4:00 and running to follow.
