We may be in a new classification, but the results were very similar from recent years as Mason once again dominated the tennis competition at district last week in Uvalde. Mason captured first in every event in both varsity and JV.
In girl’s singles, sophomore Makenzie Mitchell captured first place losing only 6 games in the tournament. Three of those came in the finals against teammate Ellie Blair. Ellie had to come back after the finals to play Mason’s only playback match, but soundly defeated Center Point’s Christina Perez 6-1,6-2 to earn her first trip to regional.
Girls doubles looked much the same as singles as the Mason teams of Denay Baxter and Brittany Estes locked horns with teammates Madison Burney and Lauren Keith. Baxter and Estes took the match 6-2, 6-0. They lost only three games in the entire tournament. All the girls singles and doubles should go into the regional tournament as top seeds and should be the ones to beat.
The boys team had a much more difficult time than did the girls. Freshman, Matt Banner, didn’t struggle at all until the finals where he met D’Hanis’s Will Lamon. Lamon had already eliminated Mason’s other entry, senior Gabe Gonzales. Banner dropped the first set in the finals 4-6, but rallied behind sound ground strokes and some good volleys to take the last two sets 6-1, 6-4.
Another disappointment came in boy’s semi-finals doubles match where Matt Harper and Thach Martin lost a heartbreaker 6-4, 7-5 to the defending state champions from Menard. We had opportunities, but made more mistakes than did Hill/Kothmann. Harper and Martin came back to dominate the third place match 6-3, 6-0 against Dalton / Galindo of Rocksprings.
In the finals, Bobby Buist and Michael Vargas overwhelmed Hill and Kothmann 6-2, 6-0. The boys played a very controlled match and eliminated many of the errors that have plagued them over the last couple of years. We had split with Menard a couple of weeks ago, but this match was over very quickly as the boys simply outplayed their opponents.
The mixed doubles was the division of divisions. There were seven past state qualifiers playing in mixed this year at district including the team that was third at state last year.
Mason’s Amanda Henrich (a state qualifier from 2007) and Dakota Wawrzyniak played Sabinal’s Hawkes/Horton (3rd at state last year) in the semi’s. Mason took that match 6-3, 6-4 to get them to the finals.
The other semi’s was between Menard’s Lacy Lyckman and Zach Rambo (both state qualifiers last year…Lyckman was the defending state champion in doubles) and Mason’s Shayla Estes (2nd at state last year) and Jared Hudson. Mason was never in the first set, but rallied back in the second set fighting off 3 match points before dropping the match 6-0, 7-5. It was a heartbreaking loss.
It has been real tough for these two all year as they don’t get to play with each other very much. With Jared in baseball on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays then Shayla in track meets on Thursdays, it just didn’t leave much time to workout as a team. We haven’t played together as a team since the last match in team tennis back in early March. We knew going into this that it would be tough, but both of these kids are great athletes and we hoped that would see them through. We just came up a little short.
This means that Mason will be represented in all divisions and double representation in girls singles and doubles. The tournament will start on Wednesday morning at 8:30 in College Station. At press time we don’t have any draws times.
The Junior Varsity also dominated the district tournament as they combined for 52 points with Junction being the closest competitor with 12. This sent a great message to the district that Mason will reload next year for another run. Many of these players would have been qualifying for regionals had it not been for our varsity players playing ahead of them.
Results for the JV division are as follows:
