Though Superintendent Matt Underwood had expressed concerns about the school district possibly stepping beyond its primary goal of focusing on the education of Mason County students, the Mason I.S.D. Board of Trustees on Monday voted unanimously to institute an on-site daycare facility to serve faculty and staff children.
Several MISD staff members had been pushing the proposal for the last few months, and Tammy Parrish, Brooke Rosberg and Kyla Rausch made the final presentation to the board. They presented financial information gleaned from visits to other schools that had such facilities, and also answered questions from board members about whether or not an onsite facility might be a distraction for them.
The faculty members explained that they were completely focused on their teaching when they were at work; but, knowing that they could be more responsive to their children would actually help them be less disracted. They also pointed out that many new mothers on the staff had to leave campus to nurse, which had been even more of a drain on those individuals.
The board also voted to approve the lease of a portable building to house the daycare facility.
