The 2009 Texas Wrangler State Finals Rodeo is set for May 31- June 7 in Gonzales, Texas. Students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades from all over the state of Texas and New Mexico have competed in their respective Region rodeos and have placed in the top 8 in their events to be able to move on to the State level of competition. These top rodeo contestants of each of the ten regions will gather in Gonzales to vie for the top 4 spots in each event in order to move on to the Wrangler National Finals in Gallup, New Mexico in early July. The first performance at State will begin on June 1. Morning performances start at 9:00 a.m. and evening performances at 6:30 p.m. The Short Go will be held, June 6, at 6:00 p.m.
Three local cowgirls will be competing in different events from their respective regions. Bailey Wright and Lydia Bierschwale will be representing Region II. Catelyn Felts will represent Region III. Bailey is a 6th grader at Mason Jr. High and the daughter of Curtis & Tommi Ann Wright and the granddaughter of Jackie & Carolyn Roddie of Fredonia. She will compete in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Ribbon Running.
Lydia is a 7th grader at Mason Jr. High and this is her second year to be able to participate in the Wrangler State Finals Rodeo. She was the State Pole Bending Champion in 2008 and competed at the National Finals in Gallup, New Mexico last summer. This year she is going back to State in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Break Away Roping and Goat Tying. Lydia is the daughter of Tommy & Megan Bierschwale, the granddaughter of Johnnie & Linna Bierschwale of Harper and George & KK Brannies of Mason.
Catelyn Felts, a 7th grader at Mason Jr. High, is competing for her second time at the State level in Gonzales. She will be in the Break Away Roping and Barrel Racing . Catelyn is the daughter of Rusty & Cathy Felts of Hext.
In addition to all of these accomplishments, Catelyn Felts and Lydia Bierschwale are on the Wrangler All Star Team this year because of their success in their respective regions last year. Catelyn is on the All Star Team in Break Away Roping. Lydia finished the year in first place in Ribbon Running with her partner Kody Mahaffey of Sweetwater to get a spot on the Wrangler All Star Team.
