The Hill Country Home Builders Association (HCHBA) recently announced the recipients of three $500 scholarships. This is the inaugural year that the HCHBA has invested scholarships into local high school graduates that are interested in continuing their education in a Building Trades or Construction related field.
In October of 2008, Rick Schafer, current President of the HCHBA, shared his intent with the Board of Directors that “somehow, we will raise money for scholarships”. Rick Schafer is the owner of Rick Schafer Homes and is committed to helping young people find their niche as future builders or trade contractors. The Board of Directors was very supportive of this idea and interested in providing scholarships by May of 2009.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way…
Roy Riley, Manager of M.G. Building Materials and a HCHBA Board Director, began to organize an extensive Bottle Auction for the annual Christmas Party. The Bottle Auction itself was a very exciting event in that everyone knew what the six prizes were, such as a $500 rifle, $400 cash, and a $50 gift basket; but no one knew which prize went with which bottle! Roy Riley auctioned off each bottle with a total of $2,850 being raised. The Board of Directors then decided to allocate 50% of these proceeds for scholarships.
It took the vision of Rick Schafer, the tenacity of Roy Riley, and the giving hearts of the HCHBA members for these students to receive financial assistance for their continued education:
Orlando Jaquez, a Mason High School graduate attending University of Texas San Antonio with a declared Major of Architecture.
Sarah M. Maxwell, a TIVY High School graduate attending Texas Tech University with a declared Major of Architecture.
Sean Moran, a TIVY High School graduate attending Alamo Community College in Kerrville and then Texas State University with an intended Major of Construction Engineering.
