Dear Editor

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Superintendent Matt Underwood for answering the request from myself and other concerned citizens, to publicly submit the adopted budget for the future Mason ISD Daycare Facility. Furthermore, Mr. Underwood has been very accommodating in answering all questions in reference to this project, which was passed by a unanimous 7-0 vote of the Mason ISD Board of Trustees.

However, the information submitted substantiates my concern as a taxpayer, that the Mason ISD Daycare project will use almost $60,000 taxpayer dollars over three years to subsidize it’s operation. I pose the following questions to the board of trustees, parents, and taxpayers. Should a program such as this, which requires subsidized funding, take priority over other educational needs? Is such a program in concert with Mason ISD Mission Statement? “The mission of the Mason ISD is to provide an educational program which will enable each student to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies he or she will need in order to reach his or her maximum potential and become a responsible member of our society.”

In closing I would also like to say to the School Board members, having been there and done that myself, I know the job is often difficult and usually thankless. Although we may have disagreements, I do sincerely appreciate your service to our community.
