Edgar Lange Edmiston, Sr. passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the age of 99. The only child of William Edgar Edmiston and Elsie Lange Edmiston, he was born August 26, 1910, in his grandmother’s home at the Lange Ranch near Katemcy, Texas. Except for the last few years, he lived within three miles of his birthplace the rest of his life.

Lange attended school at Katemcy and later graduated from Mason High School in 1929. It was while serving on the Katemcy School Board that he happened to interview a young woman named Marie Hasty who had applied for a teaching position. They were married on January 9, 1943. He brought his wife to live on the ranch, which was part of the estate established by his grandparents in 1891. It was there they ranched together, rode the range and raised their three children.

Active in the community, Lange served at various times as a member of the Mason Junior Chamber of Commerce, a trustee for the Bethel Cemetery and as a director for the Mason Farm Bureau. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. In 1958 he was elected to the board of directors of the Hill Country Telephone Cooperative, where he served for 25 years, with the last 12 years as Vice President.

A man of faith, Lange obeyed the Gospel and was baptized in 1934. He was an active member of the Mason Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Edgar L. Edmiston, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie, of Katemcy; his son, William Edmiston and wife Tylene of Georgetown; and his daughter, Marilynn Hood and husband David of College Station. Lange is also survived by seven grandchildren who called him “Chief”: Robin Edmiston, Glenn Edmiston, Ericka Edwards, Chip Edmiston, Erin Casey, Amy Simoneaux, and Andrew Hood; and by eleven great-grandchildren, with number twelve on the way.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Mason Church of Christ building with Wayne DeDear leading the services. Burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery at Camp Air. Serving as pallbearers are Robin Edmiston, Chip Edmiston, Andrew Hood, Nickie Nobles, Paul Lehmberg and Jerry Bearden. Honorary pallbearers are Lange’s many friends, neighbors and relatives who have been so supportive through the years.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Mason Funeral Home.
