JV Punchers Fall to San Saba
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 • Posted September 16, 2009

Editor's Note: The following was received too late for the September 9 edition of the paper. The September 10 Junior High and Junior Varsity games were cancelled due to the heavy rainfall.

The JV Punchers played their first game of the season last Thursday night and fell in a close game 12 – 8 to the visiting San Saba Armadillos. It was a well played game by both teams, with San Saba pulling away in the final quarter to snatch away an opening day victory for the JV Punchers.

The Punchers led most of the game, getting on the board with a Clay Walker touchdown run in the 2nd quarter followed by a Winston Trip to Andy Duarte two point connection that pushed the lead to 8 - 0. San Saba responded in the 3rd period with a short pass and catch that turned into a 45 yard touchdown after the receiver slipped away from the Puncher defenders. The two point conversion pass attempt was knocked down by the Punchers who now led 8 – 6. This score would stand until late in the 4th quarter when a Dillo receiver would again elude Puncher defenders on a 4th and long play that ended in a 60 yard touchdown completion. After another Puncher drive stalled, the defense stood tall once again to get the ball back for a final drive down the field. It was not to be however, as the Dillos forced a fumble and recovered to run out the clock and escape with a victory.

The JV Punchers have been working hard again in practice this week and are looking forward to showing off their hard work this Thursday night against the Johnson City Eagles in Johnson City. The game will follow both a 7th and 8th grade game, and we hope to see a great showing of Puncher faithful to cheer us on to victory.
