At the beginning of the year the football web-sites and regional newspapers were calling the Mason vs Goldthwaite game one of the top three dream games in Class1A this year. Fox Sports Southwest called it a can’t miss showdown of two State ranked power house programs! Both teams have held firm in the statewide top twenty polls, however, our Punchers will go into Friday nights contest a slight underdog, with our Punchers ranked 14th and Goldthwaite ranked 3rd.
Goldthwaite has been one of the premier Class1A programs for over 25 years and needs no introduction. The mere words,” The Golden Eagles” can cause cheerleaders to sigh and the old timers to wince! Goldthwaite’s smash mouth style and take no prisoners attitude is legendary in these parts. Each year they seem to reload as if their players fell off an assembly line. Going deep into the playoffs has become so common place, residents of Goldthwaithe circle the dates on their calendar prior to the season as if they are planning a vacation.
This may be one of the best Goldthwaite teams that we have seen in some time. They are currently ranked 3rd in the State; are averaging over 30 points a game; and have yet to let an opposing team score. Let me repeat that, Goldthwaite has given up 0 points this year. The foundation of their team is a group of solid down linemen and a all purpose RB/DB by the name of Jonathon Williams. ( 6’0" 175lbs 4.6 ) You may remember him from last year's 49-41 epic battle. He can flat out play and will be dangerous the minute he steps out of the locker room. Goldthwaite also seems to be passing the ball more this year with over half of their total offensive production coming through the air.
If Goldthwaite has an Achilles heel it is the Punchers of Mason. History shows that the Punchers seem to have Goldthwaite's number and always rise to the occasion when the Golden Eagles appear on the schedule. They have played each other 37 times with Mason throwing the knock out punch 18 times. Our Punchers looked exceptional last week and appear to be building steam. Our ground attack was stellar, the defense stepped up big all night long, and nobody saw the Yonker to Villarreal touchdown pass coming. They seem to be moving through non-district play at about the same pace as they did last year with preparation for that all important district play being the priority
Make no mistake about it, this is a statement game and I expect that the Mason Faithful will be hanging from the rafters at the Puncher Dome Friday night. Get there early and settle in for what should be a good old fashion West Texas shootout between a couple of........... DREAM TEAMS !!!!
