Mother told me something that has lasted throughout my motherhood. She said,”When they are little they step on your feet. When they grow up them, sometimes Will step on your heart.”
I don’t know how many restless nights I had when my boys were teenagers. I often wondered how a father could go to bed and sleep, when he had sons out there driving and doing who knows what. But, fathers don’t bother with this phase of parenting. They have mothers to do all of that for them.
I knew the sounds of my boy’s cars and pickups. Those were the best of all sounds at one o’clock in the morning. Happy, had a 280Z that he had a sound system that thumped. Branden’s had loud mufflers and I’m talking LOUD! While Brody’s was not hitting on all cylinders and had that chug-chug noise coming up the hill.
I’d want them to call me when they got there and call me when they were leaving. But, those were the days before cell phones and it wasn’t cool to call home. One time I told Branden, “Do you know how worried I was?” His reply was, “Momma, I wasn’t worried at all about you!” Yep, the smart/mouthed days, too!
However, I knew I wasn’t the only mother sitting up worried about kids out. I had a few to call me and then I’d call a few, too! They all had fathers that were sound asleep, too! Somehow, all the fathers that slept through the nights of kids out on dates, your chickens will come home to roost! And I hope I live long enough to see it!!!!!!
P.S. When life throws you curves, learn to DUCK!
