Mason vs Menard, The Zamora Express
Wednesday, September 23, 2009 • Posted September 23, 2009

The road to the State Championship will begin this week as district play kicks off all over the state. You have to finish as one of the top three teams in your district to qualify for the playoffs. District 29 is once again stacked, with Menard and Eldorado both featuring two All-West Texas players and Junction rolling out another.

Our Punchers will travel to Menard Friday night and open up district play against the Yellowjackets. Menard will bring in a record of 4-0 into Friday nights game and have looked sharp on both sides of the ball. They have put 120 points on the board this year and given up only 14. Their offense is once again built around All-West Texas John Zamora who is a pre-season district MVP candidate.

Zamora ( 5’8" 165lbs) who runs a true 4.4 is the most explosive running back in all of West Texas. He is an absolute game changer every time he touches the ball and will have you on the edge of your seat all night long. He was the West Texas player of the week 6 times last year, rushing for over 1900 yards and 21 touchdowns. Accompanying Zamora will be a rugged All-West Texas WR/DB by the name of James Kothman ( 6’0" 175LBS 4.7 ) Last year he led the team in receptions, tackles, interceptions and prides himself on just physically wearing you down.

Our Punchers will bring in a record of 2-2 into Friday nights contest. In spite of the heart breaking loss to Goldthwaite last Friday they still remain state ranked at #22. Last year it was our offense that had eveybody’s attention. This year it is the emotionally charged defense that has caught everybody’s eye. The ‘Purple Crush” have given up only two rushing touchdowns in the past two games and are swarming to the football with a high sense of urgency. Last week they brought Goldthwaite's potent wishbone offense to a grinding halt with several teeth rattling hits and came up big on third and short all night long.

District games have a different feel then non-district games and you will start to feel the high stakes buzz all over town this week. It is that time of year where every down is critical and there is no room for error. Menard is a short drive, so let's all jump in our rigs, bring the purple storm to Menard and shut down................THE ZOMORA EXPRESS !!!!!
