Over the Weekend, the Mason cross country teams traveled to San Antonio for the annual UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic. The meet is held at the Brooks-City Base Golf Course, which is also the site of the 2009 Region IV Cross Country Meet. Many teams that will be competing in the Regional meet were on hand.
Class 1A ran in the heat of the day with the girls starting at 2:25 PM. The top finisher for the Cowgirls was Hillary Bibb in 13th place with a time of 13:47. Close behind her, and making great stride this season, was Yolanda Gonzalez. Yolanda ran a personal best of 14:00 and finished 16th. Jacie Rychlik and Kaitlyn Cavness ran consistent with their races from Hardin-Simmons running a 14:11 (20th) and 14:22 (23rd). Rounding out the Cowgirl team was Myles Banner in 48th place. The Cowgirl team did not perform as well as they would have like to, however, they ended up with a 4th place team finish behind two state ranked teams. The Cowgirls have their work cut out for them in the next six weeks, but they definitely have a shot at returning to the state meet.
At the completion of the 1A girls, the Punchers were ready to run. The Punchers won the 2008 UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic, as well as the 2008 Region IV meet. They were back to defend their title. At the mile marker, the top five competitors for Mason were in the top ten and that is where they all stayed. Front runner, Tomas Callejas, complete the 5K course in 17:24 to take the Championship trophy. Emmanuel Segura fought hard to stay with his teammate, even though he had been sick the last couple of days, and finished with an 18:12 to earn a third place trophy. Just behind our second runner was Ramiro Casas (18:36), Zen Steward (18:41), and Jorge Morales (18:55) placing 5th, 8th, and 10th. Zack Bjork and Cass Castillo wrap up the boy’s team finishing 34th and 43rd. These young men compete hard against each in practice, which is why as team they finish so close to each other. That type of team effort is how the Punchers will be able to stay on top this season. The Punchers dominated the competition with a point total of 22, only 7 points away from a perfect score.
The next cross country meet will be in Llano this Saturday. It begins with the varsity girls’ division at 8:30, followed by the varsity boys’, JV, and then Junior High divisions.
The Mason Pride of the Hill Country Meet will be held on Saturday, October 10th. We are in need of two four-wheelers and volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Sherry Keller at the high school or email email@example.com.
