7th vs Harper
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 • Posted September 30, 2009

The 7th Grade Punchers had a split schedule this past week. They traveled to Harper and the 8th Grade stayed at home to take on the visiting Menard Yellow-jackets.

In the Harper game the Punchers were playing a mixed 7th and 8th team, with the majority of the players being 8th graders. In spite of this disparity, our guys did a great job. We hate to divide our kids but it is better than not letting our younger guys play.

In the opening period, Harper scored mid-way through the quarter, then tacked on the two point conversion, putting the Punchers down 0-8. When the Punchers finally had their turn at offense, a good Harper defense forced a fumble. As the 2nd period began, Harper pushed in another score, but the Punchers held on the PAT, but found themselves down 0-14.

As the second half began, Miguel Castillo picked off a Harper pass near the fifty yard-line, then proceeded to take it to the end-zone for a Puncher score. The PAT failed but the Punchers were on the board 6-14.

Each team dug in on defense for the remaining periods of the game. Several good stand-outs were noted, namely, running backs , Rylee Owen, Miguel Castillo, Ed Villareal, and Louis Castillo. Linemen and defensive backs that did a good job were, Uli Alvarez, Kyle Zavala, Zane Haley, and Sam Martinez. Next week the 7th Punchers will take on the visiting team from Fredericksburg on Tuesday.
