The Mason JV Punchers made the trek to Harper Thursday night to take on the Longhorn JV. The Punchers controlled the action from the opening kickoff and were able to bring home their first victory of the season.
The Puncher defense continued its dominance over opposing offenses, and was the catalyst for an increase in offensive efficiency. After an opening drive three and out by the Longhorns, the Punchers promptly marched down the field to score on a Clay Walker touchdown run. Following a Winston Trip to Bodie Adams two point conversion pass, the Punchers led 8 – 0. After another strong stretch for the defense, the Punchers continued to pound away at the Longhorns on the ground. Clay Walker busted through for his second touchdown run of the evening to increase the Puncher lead. Rio Schmidt kicked the PAT, and the Punchers were up 15 – 0. After a Jake Newsom interception set up the next drive, the Punchers drove the ball down the field again. Topped off by a Kramer Watson touchdown plunge with 2 seconds remaining in the half, the Punchers pushed ahead 21 – 0 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Punchers continued to look sharp finishing the opening drive with an Austin Trip to Bodie Adams touchdown connection that would stretch the lead even further. Schmidt again kicked the extra point through to cap off the Puncher scoring for the night as the score read 28 – 0 in favor of the Punchers. The rest of the game featured tough running on both sides of the ball as well as some timely defensive plays to stymie any attempts to score. The Longhorns eventually pushed one score across the Puncher goal line but could not muster another point as the Punchers continually rose up to shut the Horns down. The Punchers walked away after all was said and done with a 28 – 8 victory.
The Punchers want to thank all of the supporters who traveled to Harper to help bring home a victory. The JV will travel to Eldorado next week to take on the Eagles in a game that will immediately follow the 8th grade game. We hope to see you all there to help cheer us on to victory.
