JV Comes Up Short against Glen Rose
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 • Posted October 14, 2009

After exhausting all local possibilities for opponents, the JV Punchers were forced to travel all the way to Stephenville to meet the 3A Glen Rose Tigers in a JV matchup last Thursday night. The Punchers fought valiantly throughout the game, but were unable to capture a victory as they fell 15 – 13.

It was the Tigers who got on the board first after a couple of drives by each team stalled out. The Tigers punched in the only touchdown of the first half and after a successful two point conversion, led 8 – 0. The teams would break for halftime with the same score despite a few promising drives by each team that were eventually thwarted by solid defensive play.

The Punchers kicked to the Tigers to start the second half, and they wasted no time in getting their offense going. They busted a big play that set up a second touchdown run on 4th down to take a 15 – 0 lead. The Punchers were not to be counted out just yet, as they pounded out a long scoring drive of their own capped off by a Rio Schmidt touchdown run to bring the score to 15 – 6.

On the ensuing kickoff, Bodie Adams’ pooch kick was recovered thanks to some great hustle by Winston Trip to give the Punchers the ball once more with the momentum. The Punchers attacked the Tigers on the ground all the way down the field until an alert Austin Trip picked up a Puncher fumble and found the end zone to close the Tiger lead even more. Rio Schmidt added the PAT and the Punchers now trailed by only two, 15 – 13.

The Punchers would not get another opportunity to score however, as the Tiger offense proved to be up to the challenge of chewing up the rest of the time remaining. They proceeded to run out the clock to end the game and escape with a 15 – 13 victory.

The JV Punchers played an extremely good game on both sides of the ball and were able to compete against a very good opponent in a game that will prove to be a great building block in the continued development of these young Punchers.

We are looking forward to another challenge this week as we will once again take to the road to play the Albany Lions in Baird, Texas. The game will immediately follow the JH game, which will put the start time around 6:30. We hope to see you all there to help cheer us on to victory.
