Callejas Wins POTHC Meet
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 • Posted October 14, 2009

The annual Pride of the Hill Country cross country meet was held last Saturday at the Mason City Park. Due to many different conflicts, and influenza taking over many schools, the meet was smaller than normal but there were many good runners from the area.

Beginning at 9:00 in the morning were the varsity and junior varsity boys’ divisions. Leading the pack from the start line all the way to the finish was junior Puncher Tomas Callejas. Completing his 5K run in 17:17, he has shown to be a very consistent runner that improves daily and is one of the top Class A runners in the state of Texas. The other six Punchers all ran their personal best times. In 2nd place was Emmanuel Segura (17:52), Ramiro Casas in 3rd (18:20), Jorge Morales in 4th (18:24), and Zen Steward in 5th (18:28). They won the Mason meet with a perfect score. Their goal is to return to the state meet for another medal. Each individual is shooting to improve weekly so that the top five boys will run as a team an get everyone’s time down to a sub seventeen. Competing in the JV Boys’ division were Jansen Rychlik and Zack Bjork. Jansen, in his first ever cross country meet, finished 5th (19:56) with teammate Zack in a close 6th (20:00). Those are great times for our younger runners.

Kaitlyn Cavness was the top finisher for the Cowgirls posting a time of 13:27 for 4th place. Outsprinting teammate Hillary Bibb (5th – 13:28) to post a time that is within one second of her personal best as a freshmen. Speaking of freshmen, Jacie Rychlik continues to improve posting her personal best for the fourth meet in a row of a 13:28 finishing 6th. Yolanda finished in 9th (14:04) and Myles Banner in 13th (15:02). The Cowgirls finished 2nd as a team behind 3A Bandera.

The season continues to get better and better for both the Punchers and Cowgirls. With the continuation of their hard work and commitment, they are sure to achieve the goals they have set out to accomplish. I would like to thank all of the volunteers: Lee Graham, Merlina Gamel, Jennifer Moneyhon, Tina Blair, Larry Smith, Cathy Felts, Pam Kruse, Mitzi Drennan, Tommy Newsom, Sherrie Cordero, Ken Cordero, Tiffany Ake, Jeff Guice, Paul Rice, all the parents of the competitors, and the student body for making this meet run so smoothly. Also want to give Gerry Gamel a big thanks for showing his support and snapping some great photos of the runners.

Next meet will be in Brady on the 19th of October (Monday) at the Golf Course. High school divisions begin at 10:00 a.m. and the junior high divisions at 4:00 p.m.

The District Cross Country Meet is schedule to be held in Junction on the 28th of October (Wednesday). Times for the event are not scheduled, but we will post them as soon as we get the information.
