Our Punchers, who have been marching through district play laid down 57 points on Irion County last weekend and barely broke a sweat. More importantly our Punchers are winning with class and keeping it all in perspective. In an era where players often think they are better then they really are, it would have been easy over the past several weeks for our Punchers to become a little full of themselves.
That has not been the case with this team. Our Punchers will all be quick to tell you that winning the District Championship and a deep run in the Playoffs is what it is really all about. In my opinion this group of young men exude a level of maturity and focus that you do not find very often in a group of 16 and 17 year old boys and their cerebral approach can only benefit them as they chase the dream of a State Championship.
This week our Punchers will travel to Rocksprings. It is “the set up game”, for the District Championship and we can not afford to have a hiccup. A win at Rocksprings will set the stage for the showdown with our arch rival, Junction, the following week in Mason. For Rocksprings the game is also a must win. A loss would all but knock them out of the Playoff hunt. You can also expect a big crowd for this game due to the fact that Junction has an open week and I am sure they will be doing a little recon.
Rocksprings always rolls out a team that is built around a defense with a bit of an edge. Last year they showed up in Mason and gave us all we could handle. The Angoras are anchored by two players who received dual All-District honors at runningback and linebacker. Justin Brock (5’10" 165lbs) and Tommy Ruiz (5’9" 165lbs). Do not be fooled by their size.
With the Playoffs looming on the horizon we also need to start to pay attention as to how things are shaking out in Region 4. Here are the latest Padilla Power Rankings for our region:
