Cross Country Continues Its Success
Wednesday, October 28, 2009 • Posted October 28, 2009

Last week, the cross country teams competed in Brady at the Bulldog Invitational held at the Brady Golf Course on Monday, October 19th. It was the last meet for the Punchers and Cowgirls to compete in order to prepare themselves for the upcoming UIL District, Regional, and State Meets.

With an extremely steep hill about 2200m into the race and the brutal wind pounding in their faces for the last 600m of the race, all of the runners put forth maximum effort. Hillary Bibb led the Cowgirls with a season best time of 13:11 (4th) on a difficult course with high winds. Following close behind with a personal best time was Jacie Rychlik posting a 13:25 (6th). Shayla Estes competed in her first meet of the season finishing with a 13:54 (11th). Completing the team score was Yolanda Gonzalez running a 14:04 (17th) and Kaitlyn Cavness 14:30 (24th). The Cowgirls placed 2nd overall.

The Punchers faced some talented runners that traveled all the way from Crane. However, the depth of our team was too much to handle for them. The boys’ course was just as windy with two giant hills. One of the hills placed just after the 2400m mark and another at the 4000m mark. The Cranes took the top two individual spots, as well as the 9th place, but the Punchers still dominated posting five individuals in the top 10. Tomas Callejars in 3rd, Emmanuel Segura in 4th, Ramiro Casas, in 5th, Zen Steward in 6th, and Jorge Morales in 10th. Rounding out the Puncher team were Jansen Rychlick in 17th and Zach Bjork in 20th.

Looking to the future, the Puncher and Cowgirls have the opportunity to keep moving forward. Neither team has yet to compete in a meet where every runner has performed to their potential. With our hopes and dreams just a few weeks away, the Punchers and Cowgirls are working hard to ensure their peak performance to come just at the right time.

District will be held TODAY (Wednesday, October 28th) in Junction at the Texas Tech Campus. Directions are available in the high school office. Running times are as follows: 1:00 Varsity Boys, 1:30 JV Boys, 2:00 Varsity Girls, 2:30 JV Girls, 3:45 JH Girls, and 4:15 JH Boys.
