The final meet of the 2009 season came and went. It was a perfect Saturday afternoon in Round Rock. The UIL State Meet began with the 2A competition at 10:00 a.m. and ended at 2:00 p.m. with the 1A schools.
In the Class A Girls’ competition, there were 100 runners from 24 schools across the state of Texas. Senior Hillary Bibb once again led the Cowgirls in 24th with a time of 13:05. Running her personal best time was freshmen Jacie Rychlik with a 13:20 in 45th . Just behind her was junior Shayla Estes (13:29 in 51st) and sophomore Kaitlyn Cavness (13:36 in 60th). Finishing up for the Cowgirls was junior Yolanda Gonzalez (14:01 in 77th). Even though the Cowgirls did not have their best meet of the year, the team finished the season with a 9th place state ranking in Class A. More importantly, they each achieved their individual goals they set out to achieve at the beginning of the season.
To no surprise, junior Tomas Callejas led the Punchers to their 4th place team finish. The Class A Boys’ division had 107 runners representing 36 schools in Texas. The boys, much like the girls, did not have their best meet of the season either, but what an accomplishment to end the season as the 4th best team in the state. Callejas finished the race in 12th with a 17:29. Senior Ramiro Casas had his best race of his career. Casas finished with a personal best time of 17:55 in 20th place. Sophomore Zen Steward also performed to his highest potential posting his personal best in 23rd with an 18:00. Having a rough day was sophomore Emmanuel Segura, who typically runs second for the Punchers, ran an 18:30 and finished 41st. Jorge Morales completed the team score in 56th with a time of 18:51. Freshman Zach Bjork showed a lot of heart and future potential by cutting his time. Late arrival, junior Jansen Rychlik, also looks to help the Punchers next season with his improvements.
It was yet another great season for the Mason Cross Country teams. Once again setting their goals high, the Punchers were shooting for the moon. They may not have landed on the moon, but they are still amongst the stars. With the Cowgirls, they continued to work hard to achieve what they initially thought would be impossible. That was to follow in the footsteps of two of the best distance runners that Mason has had (Lydia Bjork and Brittany Estes) and make it back to the 2009 State Championships. It continues to amaze the people around these young athletes how they continue to get better each year. Keeping moving up Punchers and Cowgirls! We are proud of you!
