#15 Mason vs. #4 Falls City - The Playoffs
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 • Posted November 18, 2009

We all knew it was coming and it was only a matter of time. It is the game that everybody has been pointing to long before the regular season drew to a close and the playoffs began, #15 Mason vs #4 Falls City.

After several weeks of being the favorite, our Punchers have once again been cast as the underdog. For the first time in a long time our Punchers and the community will need to circle the wagons and prepare for the mother of all battles as they head in to round two of the State Playoffs and take on the highly touted Beavers of Falls City.

Now let's be clear about this. There is not one newspaper or ranking service that is picking us to win this game. However, and this is a big however, the same pontificators who are picking Falls City to win will also be quick to tell you that if Mason does upset Falls City they will most probably become the Region 4 representitve and make it all the way to the State Semi-Finals. WOW!!! I just got goose bumps.

Falls City, which is located 40 miles Southeast of San Antonio, brings in a record of 11-0. They are the number one seed out of District 31, are currently ranked #4 in the state and are projected by all of the sports writers to be a state semi-finalist. Their colors are blue and silver and here is what we know about them.

Their head coach is Mark Kirchhoff. If the name sounds familiar it is because he is a graduate of Mason High School, Class of 1975. His son, Will Kirchhoff, is the quarterback and last year was the District 31 offensive MVP. He passed for over 1400 yards, threw 16 touchdowns, ran for 810 yards and scored 6 rushing touchdowns. (YIKES). Their defense which is giving up only six points a game is achored by linebackers, Nick and Joe Lyssey. The brother act combined for over 254 tackles last year and 11 sacks. The Beavers also return 15 starters from a team that reached the regional quarter finals last year, with their average height and weight falling in the 6"0' 190lbs range.( DOUBLE YIKES).

Now most teams might have a moment of pause after hearing those numbers, That is not the case with our Punchers. They were absolutely sky high at practice this week and are chomping at the bit to get a crack at the Beavers. The third quarter melt down against D’Hanis may have lit the fuse to an epic upset. I have said it once and I will say it again, this is a team that likes a good fight and Friday night will not be for the squeamish! The Punchers are fully aware of the fact that a victory over Falls City would put them in a legitimate position to make a run for the state title. The winner of this game will move on to round three and take on the winner of the Louise vs # 17 Chilton game

The #15 Mason vs #4 Falls City playoff game will take place Friday night, November 20th @ 7:30 p.m. in Boerne which is only a short hour and fifteen minute drive. So lets pack Boerne Stadium and get behind our boys!.............. GO PUNCHERS!!!!!.......... GET STATE!!!!!
