Mason Claims Bi-District Title With 51-28 Win Over D'Hanis
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 • Posted November 18, 2009

Things were very much the same on Friday night as they were a year ago, with the exception of the cold temperatures. It was a perfect night for football, and the boys from Mason and D'Hanis did not disappoint the fans.

Mason dominated the entire first half of the game. It often seemed that D'Hanis might not have truly earned their district title; but, that would be disproven in the third quarter.

In the first quarter, the Punchers first scored on a Justin Yonker six-yard run, followed by a Joaquin Mejia kick to put the score at 7-0 with 6:16 remaining.

Next, it would be David Mora on a short six-yard run for the score and another Mejia kick, and the score was 14-0 with 2:39 left in the quarter.

The final score of the first quarter belonged to Justin Yonker on a 42-yard run. This time, the Punchers went for the two-point conversion and Dillon Estes dropped in a pass to A. J. Martinez, and the score was 22-0 with 42 seconds of play remaining.

In the second quarter, the Punchers again dominated the field, but would only score in the final seconds of play when Justin Yonker shot off a 29 yard pass to David Mora, followed up by a Dillon Estes run for the two points, and the score was 30-0 when the halftime buzzer sounded.

And then came the third quarter...

The Punchers started out well enough when Justin Yonker spiraled in a 39-yard pass to Garrett Rice, putting the score 36-0, and Mejia provided the extra point for a score of 37-0 with 10:20 left in the quarter.

Then came D'Hanis. The Cowboys socred on a 53 yard pass from Chris Alvarez to David Young, followed by a run to put the score at 37-8, and 9:26 remaining.

On their next possession, D'Hanis would repeat the process with Alvarez passing to Young, and Anthony Guerra kicking the extra point. The score was 37-15 with 5:21 remaining.

With 3:24 left in the quarter, Alvarez once again passed to young for the score and Guerra kicked the extra point. Fans tightened up as the scoreboard showed 37-22.

The last score for the Cowboys would be an Alvarez pass to Jose Martinez, and the extra point attempt was no good. With no time remaining in the quarter, the score was 37-28.

The Punchers got their wind back in the fourth quarter, and would shut out the Cowboys from any more scoring.

Zach Hudson scored on a 39-yard run, followed up by the Mejia kick, and with 6:14 remaining, it would be 44-28.

Then, finally, with only 1:46 left in the game, Mason scored again as Zach Hudson dove in on a 3-yard run, and Mejia trued the kick to put the final score at 51-28.

The Punchers are the bi-district champions!

This week, Mason meets up with Falls City in Boerne, with play starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
