Inexpensive Gift Idea
We use bed buddies to keep warm. You can make them yourself. A Bed Buddy is a sewn material bag full of rice that you can heat in the microwave for two or three minutes and use to heat your sheets while you get ready for bed.
They’re also great for sore muscles or cramps. I suggest using a nice flannel material for your bed buddies. It makes them all the more comforting.
Cut the flannel into 12"x18" strips (a yard of material should make half a dozen bed buddies with some material left over, depending on the width of the flannel). Fold the pieces vertically with the backside of the material on the outside, so you now have a 6"x 18" rectangle. Sew the bottom and up the long side. The stitch does not have to be precise, so even a beginning sewer can complete this project, but make sure there are no gaps from which a piece of rice could escape.
Cut the thread and turn the bed buddy inside out so that the fluffy flannel is on the outside and your seams are on the inside.
Each bed buddy will use almost 2.5 pounds of rice. I found a jar of dried lavender and put about a tablespoon of it in each bed buddy when it was half full of rice. Other dried aromatics such as rosemary or mint would work just as well. You don’t need to add an aromatic, but without it the bed buddy has a sort of yeasty rice smell when heated. (This isn’t unpleasant, but my mother made my bed buddy without an aromatic and now every time I smell rice I get sleepy.)
Fold the edges of the top of the bed buddy inside and sew the top closed, trying to stay as close to the edge as possible.
Run a ribbon through a hole-punched card with the following instructions printed on them and tie this around each Bed Buddy:
"This is a Bed Buddy.
Before you go to bed, put this in your microwave for 2-3 minutes on high. Put it under your covers while you get ready for bed and your bed will be toasty warm when you crawl between the sheets. Once you get in bed, move your Bed Buddy down near your feet where it will keep your feet warm."
It is also great for sore muscles and joint aches. The rice filling provides a nice moist heat. Try draping it over your neck and shoulders to help you relax.
