Members of the Mason Bluebonnet Study Club decided to give up their annual dinner-out to celebrate Christmas and instead give the money that would have been spent to The Haven. The group met in Mary Hemphill’s home at 2:00 p.m. on December 7 and shared finger foods provided by each attendee. White elephant gifts replaced the usual purchased gifts, so that all money that would have gone into that purchase could also be donated for the worthy cause of keeping our local domestic violence shelter in operation.
There was no business conducted, but Tonya Lamoreaux gave an update on the status of grant aplications for The Haven. Any and all grants available will be sought. A suplemental state grant has recently been recieved, but will only last a few months at best.
The Haven is the only facility of its kind in our local area. When the club became aware of the dire straits faced by the board operating this vital community service due to mishandling of grant applications by a previous associate, members began looking for ways to help. A jar for community donations has been placed in some business locations as well as private donations encouraged. Victims of domestic violence and abuse in our area must not lose this refuge! Donations can be mailed to The Haven, P. O. Box 310, Brady, TX 76825. Anyone needing help in escaping domestic violence or abuse can call the 24 hour hotline 325-597-7644.
