Tennis Team Starts ’10 Season
Wednesday, February 17, 2010 • Posted February 17, 2010

The 2010 tennis season got off to a quick start this past weekend as Mason hosted the Puncher Shootout Tournament. Teams from Midland, Wimberley, Marble Falls, Boerne, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg gathered here to get their first taste of tennis.

Mason still had several of its top boys and girls competing in basketball, but was still able to pull off a sixth place finish. Mason was led by sophomore Matt Banner who captured the boy’s singles title without dropping a set. Matt entered the tournament as the #2 seed, but quickly disposed of all the competition.

Senior Ellie Blair reached the semi-finals via a tough hard fought victory over Kerrville Tivy’s Alexandra Moos. Ellie was forced to default the semi’s to honor a family commitment in Ft. Worth. Mason also scored some points from the senior boy’s doubles team of Thach Martin and Dakota Wawrzyniak. The boys won two matches and lost two, but both losses were in split sets.

We got an opportunity to hit against of other players and they showed us some areas on which we will need to work. Overall, our serving was pretty solid. We played some low percentage returns which needs to change as does our aggressiveness in doubles. It seemed when we played aggressively, we played well. We struggled whenever we started to lay back.

This was a pretty young group that played this week and hopefully we learned something that we can take into next week’s tournament. The 26th Hill Country Classic will be hosted here next weekend. Coming to this tournament will again be some of the top 4A and 5A teams in the state. Abilene High, Cooper and Wylie will join with San Antonio Churchill, Lubbock High, San Angelo Central, and Fredericksburg to make this one of the toughest tournaments in the state.

Matches will begin at 8:30 on Friday at the Mason Tennis Center. They should conclude around 7:00 on Friday and Saturday.

The JV will be playing in Fredericksburg on Thursday. This will be the first competition for several of these players.
