Harold "Smiley" Hodges Releases Book About Musical Journey
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 • Posted April 21, 2010

I’m writing this article for Mason County News about my Song and Video entitled; "MASON TEXAS IS MY HOME" that is on (You Tube) listed under my name Harold Hodges or my Company name; HJH RECORDS. My nickname in Mason has always been (Smiley).

The song and Video is about growing up in Mason and all my good friends that still live there and all of my dear friends that have since passed away. The Video slide show that is playing shows the Courthouse and the Town Square, the Carter Motel, The Texan Cafe and The Fina gas station that are all fine memories for us all that are old enough to remember growing up hanging out at the all night at the Fina truck stop and Texan Cafe.

All of the fabulous home cooked meals made from scratch. I can still remember the sweet smell of all the food being cooked there twenty four hours a day. All us us young guys would hang out at the Fina Truck Stop with Louis and Paul Dockal and I think they received as much fun out of teasing us as we enjoyed hanging out with them. Those were wonderful times when Mason was buzzing with constant traffic from highway traffic day and night. That was before Interstate 10 was finished and at that time it stopped at Kerville. So all travelers had to come through Mason.

I first came to Mason in 1965 with my best friend, Gordon Spaulding. We first met in school that year in San Antonio and became life long friends. Gordon’s Grandmother, Granny Carter owned the Carter Motel; so, that’s where Gordon and I stayed while we were in Mason. Wilbur Beam and I were just speaking about those times and how all of us worked at The Texan Cafe. John Beam was telling me he still remembers most of the recipes.

I was laughing with Richard Haley awhile back about all our good old times growing up and hanging out at the Fina Truck stop. So when watching my Video at (You Tube ) "MASON TEXAS IS MY HOME"; I hope it brings fond memories to everyone in Mason so they can enjoy some of the photos of our dear love ones that are no longer with us. I know I have benefited by growing up in our home town of Mason.

Shortly to be released is my documentary of my twenty-two year career about my dealings with Paul McCARTNEY and Michael Jackson taken from my self-published book; :FROM McCARTNEY TO JACKSON - my brushes with success. It will be released in the near future and I will let Mason County News know as soon as it is released. The Hollywood film director and myself shot film footage in and around Mason.
