For the first time in many a year the Mason Punchers fielded a team for the Regional Tournament. Needing to improve by 33 shots on the second day of play, the Punchers could only manage 10 strokes. But the bright side was AJ Martinez tied for second medalist with Robert Knobles from Yorktown.
It was an exciting playoff with the winner advancing to the State Tournament in Austin and the looser getting an ad-a-boy, good try and I hope to see you here next year. Both players looked a little nervous on the first hole of sudden death. Robert led off by slicing down the right side of the tree lined fairway. AJ proceeded to hit a high hook into the left rough. Each player managed to hack their second shots out of the clover ridden rough to within five yards of the green. Robert and AJ walked away from the first hole with bogies as neither could get their chip shots up and down. On the second play-off hole, both boys found the fairway off the tee box. AJ proceeded to hit his second shot on the par 5, 18th hole, in to the green side bunker. Robert pulled his second shot to the left side of the green. Neither AJ nor Robert could convert their putts. Again both boys would walk away tied.
So, back to hole #1 for the third sudden death play-off. Both AJ and Robert hit their drives down the middle of the fairway and each found the green on their second shots. Each competitor hit good putts but their balls dodged the hole and the two walked away with pars. Returning to hole 18, Robert led off with a monster drive down the middle and AJ followed right behind him. AJ placed his second shot just in front of the green while Robert found the left green side bunker. AJ chipped his third shot two feet from the hole and Robert ran his sand shot across the green. Roberts fourth shot failed to find the hole and AJ ended the drama by tapping in his birdie for the win and a trip to the State Meet. The State Golf Tournament will be held in Austin on May 10th and 11th at the Morris Williams Golf Course.
Ending his senior year with the Mason Puncher golf team is Jayton Henrich. Jayton played the last six years under me and he and his happy go lucky attitude will be missed. Despite having a busted left thumb on day two at Regional’s, he continued to fight despite the pain. Thanks for coming to practice with a good attitude. Your presence will be greatly missed.
