Mason Puncher Baseball Takes District Championship
Wednesday, May 5, 2010 • Posted May 5, 2010

Mason Punchers and fans rolled into Eldorado Saturday afternoon to partly cloudy skies, wind blowing, and a District Championship on the line. Leaving warm temperatures and sunshine in Mason, lots of folks were surprised with the wind chill in Eldorado. Not the Punchers!!! They came out from the start with bats blazing. Unlike the first time these two teams met, the Punchers were able to score in the first inning and didn’t stop there! Justin Yonker’s stellar performance on the mound was backed up with great defense in the field. With Chance Stockbridge scoring the first run in the first inning, the Puncher bats continued to be hot throughout the game. Coming into the top of the sixth inning the Punchers were ahead 7 to 0. Only 3 more runs needed to be scored to reach the 10 run mark. Kasey Kruse came through with a 2 run Home Run to bring us within one. Hits from Estevan Villarreal and Jeremy Duarte were able to put the Punchers to 10 at the end of their bat. The Eagles came to the plate needing at least 1 run to send the game to the seventh

inning. Yonker walked the first two batters putting 2 on the bases with no outs. The third batter comes to the plate and Yonker digs deep to strike him out. One down, two on. The fourth batter Yonker faces has 2 balls and one strike. On the next pitch the ball pops out of Villarreal’s glove and rolls down toward first. With heads up thinking, Villarreal gets the ball and sees the runner at second trying to steal third. He fires the ball to Austin Trip at third who tags the runner for out number two. Trip looks to first and realizes the runner at first is way off the bag and throws the ball to Kruse at first who tags the runner trying to get back to base for the game winning double play third out!!! Game over Mason wins 10 to 0. The stands erupt in jubilation as there has not been a District Championship in Baseball since the 2002 season.

With this win, the Punchers have a bye in the first round of the play-offs and will go straight to Area. We will be traveling South to a team yet to be determined. At the time the Bi-District is decided, Coach Bobby Smith will get with that Coach to determine if the Area Championship will be determined with one game or a series of games. Stay tuned to next weeks paper for the game details. Hope to see many of you coming out to support the Mason Puncher Baseball team!

Puncher Football District Champs, Puncher Basketball District Champs and now Puncher Baseball District Champs!!!!! Way to go Boys!!!!!
