AROUND THE SQUARE
Wednesday, May 19, 2010 • Posted May 19, 2010

Rain, rain, rain.

We finally got some.

Thanks to a tornado.

(And thanks, Big T, for not touching down).

Reign, reign, reign.

As in Reigning Cats & Dogs.

The new business on the west side of the square.

No wonder English is a challenge to learn.

Words sound the same but look different.

As in "rain" and "reign."

Or words look the same but sound different.

Such as cough, tough, slough.

Rough, trough, through.

Huh?

Try saying that three times real fast.

What fun.

Root, route.

Vain, vein.

Plain, plane.

Pane, pain.

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.

It’s a great language.

If you don’t let it grate on you.

Grow, brow.

Low, cow.

Row, sow.

Flow, plow.

Go figure.

No rules apply.

Fair, fare.

Fore, four.

Good, mood.

Hood, food.

It’s a language free-for-all.

Makes no sense whatsoever.

Beat, beet.

Bare, bear.

Meet, meat.

Feet, feat.

And mastering English is just that.

A real feat.

At night, the knight will write something right.

Maybe something sweet in a penthouse suite.

And on and on it goes…

What’s a person to do?

Put on a bow and take a bow.

That’s Mason.
