Even though the vehicles may not look like the traditional used school buses that so many churches use in ministering to the youth of their community, The Reverend Pastor Ernest Kirk does have a real bus ministry. And it has been operating for some time now.
Pastor Kirk lives in Brownwood, Tx., picks up youth from the Early, Brownwood and surrounding areas and travels 50 miles to Mr. Moriah Baptist Church Brady, Tx. One can tell his bus ministry is different just by the vehicles. You see, Pastor Kirk operates three mortuaries, (Coleman, Abilene, and Brownwood, Tx). He is also a counselor for the Texas Youth Commission.
For use by his funeral homes, he owns a number of hearses, stretch limousines and a 13 passenger van. You never know what the Pastor, the youth and the others that he transports to the Bible study will show up in. You can rest assured that whatever it is, it will probably be full.
Some of the youth the pastor brings to the Bible study appear to be street hardened, others appear that they just received permission from their parents to go out of town by themselves for the first time. The boys that really warm your heart are those who have serious home problems due to illnesses or some family tragedy and are looking for answers to life's toughest questions.
Last week the youngest boy in Pastor Kirks's charge was thirteen. The oldest member of the Bible study helping give answers to those tough life questions is 82 and had just celebrated his 62nd wedding anniversary. What a Bible study, males, females, husbands, wives, children, youth, all races, all ages, all trying to become more Christlike.
Up until this last week all of the youth Pastor Kirk has been busing to the Bible study have been boys. But he has invited the boys (with their parents permission) to invite their girl friends. The boys' immediate response was, "we don't have room for them." Kirk stated, 'you bring'em, I'll provide the transportation.
What kind of Bible study is it that attracts so many from such varied life styles? The Bible study is on "How to live life. " It includes such things as Godly mental health, Emotional control, respect, rational thinking, communication, abstinence, dating, marriage, sex, prayer, praise, parenting, housework, commitment, joy, peace, and all other areas of living a Christian life.
During the actual Bible study, teenage boys, that is young men, have experienced salvation, rededications, and professions of being called into the ministry.
When young women see young men come to Jesus Christ, it becomes fashionable for both to live their lives in obedience to parents instead of rebellion.
No matter how he gets them there, hearse, Limousine or a van. Pastor Kirk does have a real bus ministry.
The instructor for Rev. Kirk's Bible study is Pastor Boyd Mins from Mason, Tx. The same study is just getting started here in Mason at the Community Bible Church on Friday evenings at 7:00 PM. All are welcome. And of course, there is no charge, its God's word.
