Mason vs Harper, Season Opener
Wednesday, August 25, 2010 • Posted August 25, 2010

All the discussion about this year's schedule will become a reality Friday night, August 27th, as our Punchers begin a swing of six non-district games. The season opener will be played at the Puncher Dome against the Longhorns of Harper with a kickoff time of 7:30PM.

The last time the Longhorns and Punchers met was 2007. Harper who was the heavy favorite lost to Mason in a wild game that went into overtime. This year's contest seems to have the same feel as Harper rolls into Mason the odds on favorite once again. Harper is coached by Cody White and here is what we know about them.

Harper likes to run the spread, however, they do not have that one guy that will jump out at you. What they do possess is a seasoned offense and defense that returns 14 starters and are projected to make a 2A playoff run again. The Longhorns are built around a crafty little quarterback, #12, Jake Whitten, who threw for over 1500 yards and 13 touchdowns last year and running back, #14, Regan Randall, who was the Longhorns' work horse last year rushing for 14 touchdowns and 7 receiving touchdowns. Look for Harpers defense to test our new offensive line by blitzing early and often.

Our Punchers, who are ranked 11th in the state, will open the 2010 season with a roster that will return 17 lettermen. They will be complimented by 15 underclassmen. The infusion of new talent has allowed Coach Joy to make several personel adjustments on both sides of the ball as we made our way through the preseason. The end result is a team that will look and feel different from last year's squad. In my opinion, the new look Punchers, as I like to call them, are ready to answer the bell.

Get to the stadium early for warm ups and get your first look at one of the best kept secrets this year, Rio "Boom Boom" Schmidt. He is Mason’s first bonafide soccer style kicker and punter who can absolutely kick the air out of the ball. He makes 40 yard field goals look like a soft eight iron. He is only a sophomore, however, don’t be surprised to see Coach Joy roll him out on 4th and long. He could be a real game changer as the season progresses.

If you are in need of a 2010 T-shirt or cap stop by the JHS office and hook up with Victoria Duarte. She will be happy to help you get your game face on. Upon your arrival at the stadium be sure to pick up a 2010 season guide. It will be jam packed with everything that you will need to know about the 2010 Punchers. When you head down to the concession stand be sure to check out the new Mason Wall of Honor. It will give a complete historical snap shot of Mason football dating back to 1925.

It’s football time in Texas folks and you can already feel the buzz on the square. We are expecting a standing room only crowd due to the proximity of the towns so get to the Puncher Dome early and settle in for what should be another great year of football..........Puncher style!!!!!!!!
