Hill Country Memorial Hospital is welcoming family medicine physician Christa E. O’Leary, DO, to its medical staff.
Dr. O’Leary has joined the practice of Jason N. Peet, MD, at 110 E. Live Oak St. In addition to offering full scope family medicine services for all ages, Dr. O’Leary has a clinical emphasis in obesity and women’s health issues. She has 10 years of experience in family practice and urgent care in the Fort Worth area, and prior to her move to Fredericksburg, she spent six months practicing medicine in New Zealand. Since arriving in Fredericksburg last summer, Dr. O’Leary has served as the medical director at the Good Samaritan Center, and she also cared for nursing home patients in association with the Fredericksburg Clinic.
Dr. O’Leary said she and Dr. Peet share similar philosophies in treating patients. "Our focus is on the individual patient, and not strictly on a disease or problem," she said. "It is crucial to address all aspects of a person’s health and that includes the physical, but also the emotional and spiritual aspects as well. This requires taking the time to listen to the patient."
One of the ways this approach is evident is in the way she treats patients who are overweight. "Being overweight is often a cause of many ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain, fatigue, and even some types of cancer," she said. "Instead of merely warning patients about their weight, I can work with the patient and create a plan that works for them to take the weight off and keep it off. I look at the reasons for overeating, such as stress, and help patients cope with it in a way other than eating."
Dr. O’Leary received her doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Dallas in Irving. She completed family practice training at Scott & White Hospital and is board certified in Family Medicine. Professional memberships include American Society of Bariatric Physicians, American Osteopathic Association, Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, Texas Medical Association and the Hill Country Medical Society. She received the HealthTexas Volunteers in Medicine award in 2003/2004, she was the GRACE Charity Clinic Volunteer of the Year in 2007/2008, and she received a Five Star Quality Award from Baylor Hospital System in 2008.
Dr. O’Leary and her husband, Denis, have five children. They love outdoor adventures and have always spent time vacationing in the Texas hill country. She said, "We are thrilled to call Fredericksburg home. It has been everything we hoped for and more."
