On August 26, the Mason JV Punchers took the short drive to Harper to take on the Longhorns in the opening game of the 2010 football season.
The Punchers showcased a stingy defense and an offense that is capable of scoring at any time as they beat Harper 35-16. The Puncher ‘D’ set the pace of the game when they came up with a big stop inside the 10 yard line on Harper’s first possession.
After a couple of changes in possession the Punchers were able to break in the end zone early in the 2nd quarter on a 7-yard rush by Raul Silguera. The Longhorns answered on their next possession and took an 8-6 lead after opting to go for a two-point conversion. The Harper lead was short-lived.
Emilio Palacio returned the ensuing kick-off 80 yards for the score. Mason led 14-8 and never looked back. The Puncher defense came up big with three goal-line stands including one right before halftime when Taylor Meader stripped the Longhorn running back of the ball on the 2 yard line. Silguera added two more scores in the 3rd quarter one runs of 5 yards and 54 yards and Palacio added one of 45 yards to round out the scoring for the Punchers. Jason Berreles lead the Puncher ‘D’ with two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Also coming up big on defense was Levi Everette who had a sack and two fumble recoveries along with Price Ruffin who caused a fumble and Elliot Bibb who recovered one. In all, the Puncher defense had 6 sacks and forced 5 turnovers. Mason will take on Junction Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Puncherdome. This is a change in start time from the published schedule.
