Ferd Slocum, Jr.

On September 6, 2010, Ferd Taylor Slocum Jr., known to all as "Ferdy," left his earthly home to join his Lord and Savior in Heaven. Ferdy was a beloved husband, father, son, and brother. He will be missed dearly. Ferdy had a passion for the outdoors and loved horses, hunting, and playing golf. He had a contagious spirit and was always smiling, and will be remembered as being a fun loving, caring friend and family man.

Ferd was born on July 3, 1957, in Fort Worth, Texas. The family moved from Cresson, TX, to Brady, TX, when he was a young man, and he graduated from Brady High School in 1975. He attended Texas Tech University and then earned a golf scholarship to attend Cisco Junior College.

On September 11, 1982, Ferd married Lori Leifeste in a small service in Art, TX. They made their home first in Nogal, New Mexico, where they were blessed with two children, Lena and Ferd Taylor Slocum, III. Shortly after, they returned to Mason and after a few years were blessed with two more daughters, Cassey and Cristi.

Survivors include his wife, Lori Leifeste Slocum of Mason, daughter Lena and husband Jeff Walker of Stephenville, TX, son Ferd Taylor Slocum, III, and daughters Cassey and Cristi Slocum, all of Mason, mother Margaret Smith and husband Dick of Fort Worth, TX, mother-in-law Marian Leifeste of Art, sister Marci Pearson and husband Lee Roy of Eastland, TX, sister-in-law Joan Kettner and husband Fred of Mason, step brothers Mike Smith and wife Sharon of Fort Worth, and Mark Smith and wife Monica of Bedford, TX. He is also survived by nieces Rebecca Pearson of Eastland, Jill Cochran and husband Steve of Farmington, NM, and nephew Kelly Kettner and wife Deborah of Muleshoe, TX, great niece Clara Cochran, and great nephews Jacob, Riley, and Kyle Kettner. Ferdy was preceded in death by his father, Ferd T. Slocum, Sr., and father-in-law Calvin Leifeste.

Services were held on Friday, September 10, 2010, at the Art United Methodist Church. Pallbearers included David Harding of Brownwood, TX, Kelly Kettner of Muleshoe, Lee Roy Pearson of Eastland, Harold Gentry of Junction, TX, and Fred Kettner, Dewey Eckert, Ken Stahl, and Gary Hahn, all of Mason. Honorary pallbearers included Steve Cochran of Farmington, NM, Rod Harrell of Austin, TX, Donald Dannheim, Jesse Carraway, Randy Carraway, Robert Owens, John Beam, and Doug Crouch all of Mason.

Memorials may be made in memory of Ferd to the Mason County EMS and Volunteer Fire Department, Mason County Project Hunt, Art United Methodist Church, or the church of your choice.
