On October 2, 2010 an open house will be held at the Mason County Museum and Mason County Archives on the upper floor of the Historical Building. Hours will be 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This open house is to recognize the completion of the projects resulting from several generous donations made to the Mason County Museum and the addition of the Mason County Archives room by the Historical Commission.
Due to one donation air conditioning was made possible for the whole south half of the Museum area along with much other needed work. A room adjacent to the lobby room had the missing ceiling and a wall added and was completely refinished. This now provides an area for a utility sink, a meeting and work place and an office/artifact room. Farther down the main hall two panels were constructed for a Hall of Pioneers. These panels feature all available pictures of the first settlers in Mason County and cover up to 1860, Mason's first census. The panels are divided by the community names of Mason County at that time. A new partitioned section was constructed to display artifacts housed in the middle of the museum. It was built to have niches for the variety of subject matter shown there. Displayed there on is the very interesting children's collection which may be viewed through an old window which was used to make a divider here. Around the corner at the middle of the panel are early Mason Co. photos with the next niche holding the newly acquired Christian Church pulpit from this now extinct church. Into the inside area of the panels is Mason Business memorabilia including the ever popular Mason County News eighteen hundreds die case.
Another gift made possible the addition of new security doors on each of the stairways leading to the museum. These doors will give easy egress and access to the stairs and provide new security for the Museum.
The Mason County Museum is pleased to welcome the Mason County Archives which have a new research room placed in the south east corner of the Museum. Jan Appleby will tell you more next week. This room will also be open October 2. These activities will be in conjunction with the Old Yeller Day celebration making for an enjoyable day of activities at Heritage Park.
