8th Grade Defeats Harper
Wednesday, September 22, 2010 • Posted September 22, 2010

The 8th Grade traveled to Harper this past Thursday for their second road game.

The Punchers took control early in the game with a fifteen play drive that began on the Puncher’s own 34 yard line. The drive ended on the Harper 13 yard line when Mason failed to pick-up a crucial 1st down. Harper drove the ball to the Mason 47 yard line but were forced to punt. The Punchers then put together a drive that covered 53 yards and the drive was established by the Puncher offensive line. Uli Alvarez, Darron Del Toro, and Zane Haley, set up some excellent avenues for Mason’s running backs. Miguel Castillo, Rylee Owen, and Luis Castillo pushed their way to the Harper 24 yard line. Eduardo Villarreal then broke off-tackle and scored. Miguel Castillo then hooked up with FB Rylee Owen on the bootleg and the Punchers were out in front 8-0.

Harper scored in the 2nd period after connecting on a half-back pass that gained 32 yards, but the PAT failed. When Mason regained possession, they wasted no time in putting more points on the board. The Punchers offensive line did a great job of protecting Miguel Castillo as he set up for a nice 21 yard pass and catch to Hunter Kunc on the throwback . Miguel tacked on the point after and the Punchers finished out the half 16-6.

The 3rd and 4th periods belonged to Mason as offensive linemen took control of the line of scrimmage and gained first down after first down. Sam Martinez opened the half with a determined 28 yard return up the sideline. Owens, Castillo, Villarreal , and Martinez ate up huge amounts of yardage that was topped off with a 22 yard touchdown by Villarreal. The PAT was unsuccessful but the Punchers led 22-6.

The Puncher defensive unit did a great job of containing Harpers running game. Colt Gipson, David Hill, Charles Martinez, J’Angelo Martinez, did a good job of holding Harper in check between the tackles. James Perlicheck, Jack Graves, Go Chanriang , and Luis Castillo did a good job in the secondary. Some of our most consistent players made play after play not only on offense but on defense as well. These players included Kyle Zavala, Steven Morquecho, Josh Medina and Walker Kuhlmann.

Next week the Punchers will travel to Ingram for a 6:15 kick-off.
