Wednesday, September 22, 2010 • Posted September 22, 2010

The 7th Grade began their football career with a trip to Comfort. As in the past, this first game was conducted in a scrimmage type setting.

The Punchers offensive line did a good job blocking lead by Jonathan Gonzalez, Luke Gillespie, Pedro Rivera, and James Durst. The Puncher backfield made some great runs lead by QB Seth Hudson, and running backs Samuel Dyer and Garret Bibb.

Both teams scored near the end of the first period, with Hudson’s run of 12 yards on the QB power play. The PAT was good when Hudson connected with split-end Spencer Bierschwale on a nice pass and catch.

Several Punchers did well on defense including, LB’S Jacob Morino, Seth Hudson, as well as corners Parker and Hofmann, FS Garret Bibb and DE’s Alejandro Martinez and Andy Gilley.

The Puncher’s next contest will be against Winters and will be played in Menard.

In the 8th Grade contest, the Punchers had their hands full in an even match with Comfort. Punchers defenders held Comfort in check as they ran a wide-spread run and shoot offense. Puncher LB’s and secondary made several crucial plays that included, Luis Castillo, Rylee Owen, Sam Martinez, and Miguel Castillo.

The Punchers launched a 46 yard drive that included runs from Owen, Luis Castillo, Eduardo Villarreal, and Miguel Castillo. The Punchers scored late in the first period with a nice completion from QB Miguel Castillo to Hunter Kunc for the 12 yard T.D. but the PAT failed.

Comfort countered less than five minutes later with their own score and PAT going ahead 6-7.

In the 3rd period defense was the name of the game with some really well made tackles by defenders, Kyle Zavala, Darron Del Toro, Uli Alvarez, David Hill, and J’Angelo Martinez.

The Punchers rallied back two possessions later with a score from the 18 yard line. Luis Castillo stepped in for the score followed by Miguel’s point after putting the Punchers back in front 7-14. Our offensive linemen did a great job for our backs. Defensive stand-outs included, Zane Haley, Josh Medina, and Hunter Kunc.

Next week the Punchers travel to Harper for a 4:30 kick-off.
