To the Chihuahuas, Wiener Dogs, Labradors and Terriers ... come one, come all ... Blue Heelers, Border Collies, Mixed Breeds, Beagles, and all canines - bring your humans and come to Old Yeller Day! This Saturday, October 2nd, is the Old Yeller celebration of activities from 10:00 - 2:00 at Heritage Park. The event will kick off with the Dog Parade at 10:00 a.m. and everyone is welcome to participate. There are no entry fees but you must fill out an entry form to join the parade.

There are also four dog contests that you may enter: Best Dressed Pooch, Best Old Yeller Look-alike, Best Dog Trick, and Best Owner/Dog Look-alike. Line-up for the parade begins at 9:15 on the north side of Heritage Park at the covered pavillion. The line of our beloved doggies will parade around Heritage Park, led by Honeybee the Clown. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded for each contest.

You do not have to enter any contests but may simply enjoy showing off your dog in the parade. All dogs must remain on a leash at all times. Puppies may be carried or presented in wagons or strollers. Judging for the contests begins immediately following the parade where prize winners will be announced. First, second, and third place winners will be awarded for each contest category. Prizes will be given as a courtesy of Lenore & Tommy Newsome, owners of the store, Reigning Cats & Dogs.

Following the parade, join us at the park for lots of family enjoyment! Face-painting, sand art, relays, and games are always fun for the kids. Festivities also include live music played by Daryl & Petra Watson. And of course there will be hot- dogs and drinks available. Old Yeller caps, shirts, bumper stickers, zipper clips, books, DVD’s and more will be for sale at Heritage Park. We are also accepting entries for our Baking Contest to be judged at Old Yeller Day. (And it’s not just a pie contest!) All entries must be made from scratch and be sure to bring your recipe with you. Baked goods need to be at the event no later than 10:00 for judging and there is a $5 registration fee. Pecan pies, homemade bread, chocolate cakes or whatever your imagination can "bake up" are welcome. All of the home-baked items will be so yummy and the public is welcome to purchase these tasty creations!

We also have author, Lily Garst who will be coming from Austin with her dog, Gracie. Lily & Gracie will be hosting a special story time at 12:30. The author will be reading from her very own book and has planned to hand out paw-shaped cookies to the kids that attend the story time.

And for the day’s finale, join us for a presentation of the Disney movie, Old Yeller. The matinee will begin at 2:00 on Saturday. There is no cost to attend the movie and everyone is welcome! We are requesting donations to help offset the cost of acquiring Disney licensing to show the movie on this special day. A donation jar will be placed in the theater lobby or you may make a donation at the Library.

Old Yeller Day is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and all proceeds benefit the Mason Library. All entry forms with details for the parade and baking contest are available at the Library, Reigning Cats & Dogs (on the west side of the Square) and the Chamber of Commerce. Also, be sure to check us out on Facebook! For questions, please call the Chamber of Commerce at 347-5758 or the Library at 347-5446.
