The officialGreat Castell Kayak Race is always the first weekend in June. The race, founded by Jeri Alice Arsenault, has always been a fund raiser for local and regional charity. The race course is a 12 mile journey downstream from the Highway 87 river bridge over the Llano.
It beginsSaturdayJune 7th with registration at 8 a.m. at the Llano River RV Park in Mason County. The race ends at Riversounds, west of Castell on the south bank.
At the finish line there will be live music by Joe King Carrasco and many more. This is the sixth year of producing this event for fun and non-profit purposes. Every year the race becomes more of a tradition for Mason and Llano county residents, businesses, and tourists. Register at the put-in point Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. Proceeds will be donated to theLiveStrong Organization, started by cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong. Race fee is $35 and includes a 2008 t-shirt, beer by Budweiser, Dr. Pepper, water, snacks, free camping and free finish line concert. The race will beprecededby The Great Auction at the Badu House in Llano Texas, June 6th starting at 6:30 p.m. 100% of all proceeds from the auction will be donated to the LiveStrong Foundation. The auction dinner tickets are $50 and include a salad, choice of stuffed pork loin or picatta chicken, rosemary potatoes, green bean medley, wine and desert. Part of the ticket money will also go to LAF.
The funds raised by this effort will be returned to these communities through the services provided by www.Livestrong.org. The GCKR team has joined forces with the Llano Memorial Health Care System, Scott and White and The Wellness Center in Fredericksburg to bring support and services to the rural areas in the Hill Country.
