Kaboom! That was the sound that would best describe what could be heard in Baird, Texas last Thursday when the 8th Grade Punchers hit the field. The Punchers took on the Cubs from Olney, Texas in Baird last Thurday. When Go Hasanai kicked the opening kick-off to the Cubs 18 yard line, followed by the opening snap and 8 yard sack of the Cub QB, it was pretty much downhill for all the rest of the evening if you were a Olney fan.
The Punchers scored early in the 1st quarter when Sam Martinez picked off a Cub pass and covered 17 yards, followed by a T.D. run by Luis Castillo from the 14 yard line. Miguel Castillo then hit Rylee Owen with a bootleg pass and the Cubs began to know they were in trouble. On the Puncher’s next possession, Castillo hit Hunter Kunc on the throwback pass for another score and Uli Alvarez gathered in a Castillo pass for the PAT and the Punchers lead 0-16.
In the 2nd period, Eduardo Villarreal broke three tackles and headed down the sideline for a 44 yard T.D. Miguel Castillo then pushed over for the PAT and the Punchers lead 0-22.
After the break, Mason linemen continued to open some wide avenues for running backs. Alvarez, Del Toro, Haley, Zavala, and Morquecho made some excellent blocks, one of which resulted in a score from the Cub 38 yard line when Luis Castillo followed his trap block for the next score of the game. Kunc caught another Castillo pass for the point after and the Punchers stood firm 0-32.
The Cubs scored early in the fourth quarter on a 6 yard pass but the extra point failed. At that point the Puncher defense did an outstanding job. Our secondary covered receivers very well, these players included, Sam Martinez, Eduardo Villarreal, and Hunter Kunc, Ryan Wartenbach, Jack Graves, and James Perlichek. Linebackers Owen and Castillo, as well as defensive ends, Josh Medina and Alvarez did a great job. Olney could not gain any territory against the Puncher front which included, Colt Gipson, David Hill, Walker Kuhlmann, Charles Martinez, J’Angelo Martinez, Austin Miller, and Kyle Zavala .
The Puncher defense had one more surprise for the Cubs, when Miguel Castillo picked off another Cub pass then scored followed by a Miguel Castillo PAT. Luis Castillo finished out the game on a 31 yard touchdown up the middle then tacked on the last PAT. The Punchers came out on top 6-48. Next week the Punchers will host Johnson City.
