Lawrence Floyd (L.F.) Benton died May 25, 2008, at the age of 92 at Mason Care Center in Mason, TX. He was born on September 12, 1915, to Nettie Myrtle McKenna Benton and William Floyd Benton in Ft. McKavett, TX.
Lawrence attended school in Ft. McKavett, Kitchens and Menard. He graduated from Menard High School in 1932. After graduation, he briefly tried cowboying and then moved on to work for Mr. Abe Levinson at Star Cash Grocery. On September 12, 1941, Lawrence and his brother, Ray, enlisted in the Army Air Force at Goodfellow Field.
On June 27, 1943, Lawrence married Edna Earle Johnson in the Menard Methodist Church. Their children were born in some of the many places Lawrence was stationed—Tanya Leigh in Sherman, TX; Lawrence Floyd, Jr. (Larry) in Witchita Falls, TX; Myrtle Bob in Chateauroux, France; and Edna Elaine in Amarillo, TX. Lawrence retired from the Air Force in Amarillo in 1962 as a Senior Master Sergeant. After that, he worked another 17 years for the Bureau of Mines before finally retiring in 1981. Lawrence and Edna Earle moved to Mason, TX, in June of 1982 to be close to both of their families.
In the end, it was never Lawrence’s job titles that defined him. He was a loving and caring husband and father who surprised his children with green eggs and ham for breakfast and cherry pies with presidential profiles on top for national holidays. Lawrence loved to fish, garden, play dominoes, and most of all visit. He was active in the Methodist Men and his church’s Sunday School class. Lawrence delivered tapes of sermons and Thanksgiving dinners to shut-ins and also worked with Meals on Wheels. He was a jovial person, quick with a laugh at something funny or a thump on the head to a kid who deserved it—no matter how old that kid was. His family will miss his sense of humor, his spaghetti suppers, his homegrown sweet potatoes and even the thumps on the head.
Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Jack, Curtis, Ray and Vance, and his son, Larry.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Earle, of Mason; his daughters, Tanya Lamoreaux, of Mason; Myrtle Bob Keefe and her husband, Thomas, of North Hollywood; and Elaine Stewart and her husband, Tim, of Fredericksburg; his grandchildren, Victor Lamoreaux of Mason; Austin and Kate Stewart of Fredericksburg; and Mason Keefe of North Hollywood; his brother, Jim Bob Benton and wife LaVerne of Menard; his sisters, Peggy Decker of Bertram; Norma Murray of Menard; and Joan Crowell and husband, Mickey, of Menard.
Our heartfelt thanks to the many caring people at MKM, EMT, Mason Care Center, Knopp’s, HCMH, and Dr. Tim Stewart.
