The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, November 30th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 35 members and 3 visitors in attendance. Among the visitors were 2 Mason High School seniors, Celeste Hamilton and Yolanda Gonzales.
Lion Gene Gammill was responsible for the program and he introduced Gaylon Thorn, a local Lion and a director of West Texas Lions Eye Bank who spoke about the Eye Bank. Gaylon said there are two employees at the Eye Bank, an executive director and a secretary. The executive director travels all over the West Texas District, which runs from Kingsville to El Paso, and north to about Sweetwater, retrieving corneas that have been donated by individuals that have passed away. These corneas are then transplanted into people that need them to be able to see.
The club's next meeting will be held Tuesday, December 7th, at noon at Zavala's. The program will be the monthly business meeting. On December 14th, the last meeting of the year will be held. It is the annual Christmas party and it will be held at the Richard P. Eckert Civic Center.
The Mason Lions has an ongoing program to recycle used eyeglasses to people who need them. Used eyeglasses may be given to any Lion or left in collection boxes at any of the local banks. Also, please contact any Mason Lion if you know of anyone in our community unable to afford appropriate eye care.
