I wanted to write a belated letter to the editor, congratulating our football team and their coaching staff on a wonderful season that certainly brought pride to Mason. This is our son’s first year playing varsity, and it was very gratifying to see the town rally around our Punchers.
He told me that one of the best moments of the season was in our last game, when we were in the final minutes of losing to Goldthwaite, and the stands began chanting "We are Mason!" It made him proud to be a Puncher. That being said, I would like to encourage what Paul Rice calls "The Mason Faithful" to show the same kind of positive, encouraging cheering at the basketball games.
Especially in the smaller confines of a gymnasium, where jeering at the refs, and criticisms of the players and coaches is loud and echoing, I would hope parents and fans would match the tone of sportsmanship and good conduct which coaches demand of the players. The old adage of "if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all" is applicable here, and I would encourage the citizens of Mason to remember these big boys and girls are our children, and treat them accordingly.
Go Punchers and Cowgirls!
