Vollie Buel Clewis, 82, most recently of Georgetown, but long-time resident of Port Arthur, Texas, entered into heavenly rest on Monday, December 13, 2010.
Visitation was held on Thursday, December 16, 2010, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH 35, Georgetown, Texas 78628. A service celebrating Vollie’s life was held on Saturday, December 18, 2010, at 1:00PM at Park Central Church of Christ, 3901 Jimmy Johnson Blvd., Port Arthur, Texas 77642 with Brian French and Jimmy Snell. Interment was on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at 2:00PM at Georgetown Cemetery, Pottsboro, Texas.
Vollie was born April 25, 1928, to Fletcher Buel and Nannie Mae Logan Clewis in Thornton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Jo Roberson. Vollie was raised in the Thornton and Groesbeck area, and helped his father with their family store, until he joined the Army Air Forces Base Unit. He honorably served his country as an airplane and engine mechanic for nine months after WWII. He also served for 3 years in Casablanca, North Africa, during the Korean War. Upon his return to Texas he went to work for Texaco Refinery ("The Texas Company") in Port Arthur as a Stillman/Operator.
Vollie married Elizabeth Ann Smith on June 2, 1956, and they spent the next 54 years building their life together. Vollie loved the "great outdoors" and often could be found hunting, frog giggin’ or fishing, which always brought a tasty bounty to our table! In their younger years, he and Liz helped with annual rattlesnake roundups on a friend’s ranch in West Texas. They also enjoyed travelling together, cooking, and working on their "farm" in Mason, Texas. Vollie was an active member of Park Central Church of Christ. He retired from Texaco in 1988. He and Liz ("Nena") moved to Georgetown to be closer to their daughter’s family in April of this year. While we are sad to realize that "Grandy" will not join us on the family vacation we’ve been planning, it is a great comfort to know that any sights he would have seen on our trip pale in comparison to the joy of seeing his Savior face to face.
Vollie leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 54 years, Liz Clewis; daughter, Suenda Kirk and husband Andrew; granddaughters, Abigail Maye and Elise Margaret Kirk; nephew Lynn Roberson and wife, Jan, of Waco; niece Brenda Thomas and husband Reverend Larry Thomas, of Arlington; niece Robin Guilbault of Waco, along with many extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the charitable organization of your choice.
Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Kirk, Robert Kirk, Richard Lasseigne, John McCool, Lynn Roberson, Jimmy Snell, Brian French, Larry Landry, and Larry Thomas.
