In tribute to those who serve:
The silence of the night is shattered by sirens.
The wail disturbs the slumber of many:
Of a mother whose infant finally fell asleep an hour ago
- and who is once again awake;
Of a student who has fallen asleep atop their books...
It serves as background noise for many others:
To a priest who kneels at the bedside of a dying parishioner;
To the booking officer putting someone in the drunk tank;
To the battered individual with a hastily packed duffel bag
and a sleepy toddler, checking in at the shelter.
Not even the most sacred night is immune.
Sirens in the night mean there is trouble
- and help is on the way.
Thanks to those who answer the call to serve.
May those whose sleep is disturbed, find rest.
