The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, December 21st, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 28 members and 8 visitors in attendance.
Lion Lee Graham was responsible for the program and he introduced Janet Schmidt who spoke about her trip to Africa this summer to visit her daughter, Katie, and son-in-law, Gregg Wallace. Katie and Janet went on a 3-day, 2-night hiking safari into the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. They hiked about 18 miles into the Reserve to a very primitive base camp. While on the trip they had personal encounters with a mother elephant and her calf, a male and female lion in their camp one night, along with a male elephant on the rampage.
Janet showed pictures and a video that she had taken on the trip. She said she was never frightened, but I would have been shaking in my boots if I had experienced these same situations.
The club's next meeting will be held Tuesday, January 4th, at noon at Zavala's. The program will be the monthly business meeting.
The Mason Lions has an ongoing program to recycle used eyeglasses to people who need them. Used eyeglasses may be given to any Lion or left in collection boxes at any of the local banks. Also, please contact any Mason Lion if you know of anyone in our community unable to afford appropriate eye care.
