Mason Puncher Basketball Off and Running
Wednesday, January 5, 2011 • Posted January 5, 2011

The Mason boys basketball team has jumped out to a great start this year despite being several weeks behind most of the teams they have competed against because of the great football season we had.

The season opened with Sonora the Tuesday following the quarterfinal football game and despite having only one practice the team competed well and lost to the Broncos 43-33.

The Punchers then headed to Coleman and won their first two games against Cisco 42-26 and Coleman 65-35 and faced the #12 ranked team in 2A Jim Ned in the finals. Despite a great effort the Punchers would fall short to the Indians 56-41.

Mason then traveled to Harper to play the Longhorns who were ready to play. The team would get behind early and try to play "catch up" the entire game only to fall to the Longhorns 66-39. Though it was a frustrating loss for the players, it would show what the team needed to work and inspired the team to work hard over the holiday.

After beating Sterling City 34-31 on the last Friday of school before the holidays it was off to the Eldorado Tournament. The Punchers would down Rocksprings in the first round 61-42 and then get revenge on the Sonora Broncos in the Semi-Finals. The boys were ready to play and prove they had worked hard in practice jumping out to a 9-0 first quarter and taking a 28-5 halftime lead. The Broncos would battle back and make it a close game but Mason would prevail 40-35.

The finals would pair up the home team Eldorado Eagles versus the Punchers in a great match up. The Punchers would keep the game close in the first half and took a 29-28 lead into halftime. The third quarter would prove to be the difference as the Eagles outscored the Punchers 15-2. The boys showed no signs of quitting and pulled within two points of the eagles with only a minute left, but some key rebound help Eldorado hold on and win 53-48.

The 2010-2011 Mason Puncher team consists of Chance Stockbridge, Andy Duarte, David Mora, Winston Trip, Jake Newsom, Ethan Hudson, Austin Trip, Janson Rychlik, A.J. Martinez, Kason Wood, Trey Schwertner, Woody Watson, Nathan Hoag, and Lucas Haley.

After playing all their games on the road the Punchers are excited to play at home on January 4th against the Goldthwaite Eagles and Friday January 7th in a rematch against Harper. Please come out and support the basketball team with you cheers.
