Operation Orphans Hosts 218 Kids

Operation Orphans, Inc. recently completed its 2010-2011 season of the "Take a Child Hunting" program. 218 boys and girls from 25 Texas child care facilities participated in the five hunts. These kids were hosted by 42 area ranches where they harvested 221 animals.

On January 9, 63 boys from 13 homes hunted on 15 area ranches. Homes bringing boys were Hughes Foster Home, San Angelo; Presbyterian Home, Waxahachie; Boys Country, Hockley; Methodist Boys Ranch, Waco; Cherokee Home, Cherokee; Hope for Tomorrow, Blanket; Constancia Foster Home, Melvin; Christ's Haven, Keller; Miracle Farm, Brenham; Presbyterian Home, Itasca; Texas Baptist Home, Waxahachie; and, Guill Foster Home, Starr. Ranches hosting the eager hunters were Behrens Ranch, San Saba County; CC Davis Ranch, McCulloch; Cripple Creek, Bandera; Karl A. Ransleben, Gillespie; Korn Place, Mason; Marek Ranch, McCulloch; McMeans Ranch, Sutton; Northcutt Ranch, Mason; Operation Orphans Game Pasture, Mason; Patti & Richard Myrick, Mason; Pfeuffer Ranch, Schleicher; Rancho Rimar, Mason; Ray Ranch, Sutton; Woelfel Ranch, Mason; and YMCA Roberts Ranch, Kerr. 61 animals were harvested during the hunt. Aniamls harvested were 44 whitetail does, 8 spkes, 4 management bucks, 2 aoudad, 2 axis, and one feral hog.

Since the program's beginning in 1960, 17, 386 boys and girs have harvested 17,036 animals. The deer meat is used by the homes in their ministry and outreach programs or for their own use. Ranchers use the "Take a Child Hunting" program to maintain their deer herds and offer a memorable experience for kids who may otherwise never have an opportunity.

Mason 4-H members who prepared the sack lunches for the groups to enjoy Saturday were Price Ruffin, Rylee Owen and Claudia Canfield. Mason Bottling provided soft drinks for the sack lunches and Fredericksburg Bakery provided baked goods for everyone to enjoy during their stay at Camp Gene Ashby.

During an Operation Orphans, Inc. board meeting, Sunday, January 9, fishing and hunting dates were set for 2011. Fishing dates are April 16, Girl's Fishing Camp and May 14, Boy's Fishing Camp. Hunting dates will be November 12, Girl's Hunt; November 19, Boy's Hunt; December 3, Boy's Hunt; and January 7, 2012, Boy's Hunt.

Operation Orphans has a clothing room where participating children are able to obtain clothing which is theirs to keep. Items needed are: camoflage clothing, coats, toboggans, socks and gloves.
